Walking into a sales meeting in a large corporate structure, I gazed around the room, establishing the pecking order of the people assembled. As the meeting progressed, I decided that the largest birds had made up their minds, and that the purpose of the meeting was already a closed case. So I just listened and contributed what I could when asked, and allowed a very good client to slip through our fingers.
I noticed later that I was not feeling good, I had a pain in my gut, and my leg kept twitching. My day got worse, one of the big birds came in to inform me that if I did not start participating in the meetings more, that decisions would have to be made. And the saga continues home….
Let me rephrase what just occurred in a responsible way.
I am accustomed to corporate life, and I am a bit fearful of keeping my job – after all, the economy is bad. I heard what my immediate boss opened with, and made up in my mind that what he had just stated was cast in stone. I decided not to venture into responsible conversation by being responsible to the issues, and my own value system. Instead of copping to the truth, I made up quietly in my mind, that the boss was more powerful, in charge, and had made up his/her mind. In this way, I did not have to risk telling what I believed to be the truth of the situation nor the truth that my values dictated.
I used smooth and very eloquent words to do nothing but agree with the authority, and not the truth. In effect, I lied to myself to make this unpleasant situation go away.
It bit me square on the nose anyway when I was later accused of not participating fully in the conversation. I went home that night, and used more eloquent words when the agreements that I made with my partner were not honored, and I once again avoided confrontation by saying politely; ‘it’s ok’ – when it really wasn’t. My whole life is turning into a lie. And I cannot understand why my stomach hurts – better take some medicine….
What I am driving at here is the one ‘little’ statement running in my subconscious mind, and even heard for a split second that dictated my future actions, and incidentally, my future. That innocuous ‘little’ lie. …. ‘he had already made up his/her mind’.
This little sentence allowed me to operate outside of the truth. And ironically, was the open door for the boss to accuse me of not participating. In other words the lie backfired. It actually set up the opportunity for the boss to blame me and set up due-cause for loss of employment!
What if our underlying thought was; ‘Let truth be the authority’, vs, ‘Let authority be the truth’ A subtle LITTLE change of that ‘little lie’ that was running your life. Yes, just change it!
Once you are aware, you can do something about it.
When I am doing healing work, and we come into a place of quiet truth, these supposedly ‘little lies’ become obvious. Imagine how freeing it is to find the ‘lie’ and most importantly to replace it with a truth.
You all know what I am talking about. We all know someone in our life that seems to exasperate us with his or her truth. That is, what is on their mind is exactly what they are saying. It is just his or her truth in the moment, not the threatening awful ‘THE TRUTH’ that will probably change your life!
Did you notice, that they are still in your life? The truth is like a magnet, it draws people. It allows you to be in your truth. There a ‘feel good’ moment, when your truth is told, It actually strengthens that magnet
. So ask: Can I get where I want to go, if I will not know the truth of where I am? Notice, I said ‘will not know’ instead of ‘I don’t know’.
A ‘little’ semantic…. Maybe, you decide.
